Writing for Engineers is one of those courses we as engineer students think we do not need. However, without courses like this one, it will be quick difficult to be an engineer, let alone, work with other non-engineers. It does not matter the field and area of expertise, if communication between colleagues fails, the whole project will also fail. Communication is the most important factor in human development as an intelligent species. Without it, it is hard to imagine where we would be today. The mere creation of new technologies depends on how effectively engineers and scientists communicate with each other. And in order to communicate effectively, the majority of human society agreed on using certain dialect to communicate. This is where Writing for Engineers shines. By distinguishing the differences between colloquial and professional dialects, this course teaches the basics of communication in the workplace. Not only that but also defines our voices in such a way that it minimizes the margin of being misunderstood by our future colleagues. This is highly crucial when working with delicate subjects, for example, surgeons discussing procedures, or engineers talking about specific measurements. In these situations, communication is the key to success. Writing for Engineers does an excellent job of introducing future engineers to the proper and correct dialects that have to be used in order to ensure effective communication in the workplace.

From a personal point of view, Writing for Engineers has helped me publish my verbal communication and written communication skills. A great example of this happened when we were assigned to work on memos. This assignment, in particular, was rather peculiar due to what it actually stands for, which is the equivalent of chatting between colleagues. We had to shift our usual dialects to a more professional one. But also, we had to create a theoretical scenario where we were “chatting” with one of our colleagues about a project of our choosing. I found myself struggling not to speak in a too friendly manner with this colleague because according to the assignment description, this colleague was a close friend of ours. It was an interesting experience that definitely left me a lot to think about the world of professionals and the way they communicate. Nevertheless, it taught me the basics on how to communicate using the proper dialect in the workplace without sounding too colloquial.

In terms of the usage of language, the assignment that gave me the most trouble was the Technical Description assignment. For this assignment, we had to come up with an item with some type of functionality and describe it by using what I thought was the combination of marketing and a technical description. I had some difficulties drawing the line between marketing and the description of the item because we could not sound like one of those tv advertisements adds. But we also did not want to sound so technical that the audience would get bored. We had to pay close attention to the description given by the course book, but I personally had to go online and search for examples in order to write this assignment. This resulted in the improvement of my writing skills, structure, and usage of different dialects. However, I have to say that by the end of this assignment I was not completely sure about the quality of my work. Nevertheless, my classmates gave me good feedback during the peer review for this assignment, making me feel somehow better about the final draft.

In conclusion, Writing for Engineers has taught the importance of effective communication and the proper usage of language in the workplace. The many assignments we had to work on combined with the many resources we had made it possible for me to understand and adjust to the demands of every individual assignment. This course has taught me much more than I expected. Verbally, my skills have improved exponentially due to the different assignment I did where we had to shift our way of communication in order to deliver a message effectively. Also, as a non-native English speaker, my reading and writing skills have become sharper due to the exposure to different ways of communication. For this and more, I thank this course for providing me with the necessary tools to hopefully succeed in the professional world of engineers.

Proposal Assignment: SABER Wrist Band

.`

Professor A. Voisard

Abstract

Approximately 50% of American adults suffer from stress and anxiety. More than half of them fail to seek professional help. One of the biggest reasons people often don’t seek professional help is because of social stigma and the lack of technology on the market that tackles this specific issue. With SABER, people are able to address this tremendous problem by offering a simple solution that is personal and discrete. SABER is a “coach” wristband that helps people deal with anxiety and stress. It measures bodily signals related to stress and anxiety such as heart rate, appetite, and mood through user input, allowing SABER to improve the overall mental state of its users. SABER’s algorithm learns the behavior of its user and constantly monitors the physical data collected from the user, SABER is able to provide mental health exercises to alleviate symptoms of stress and promote more self-control and diligence. Because the collected data is personal and highly sensitive, SABER is equipped with high-security software that will ensure your data is encrypted and kept safe from exposure, malware, and other unapproved entities. You will have the option to share this data, through a secure system that is encrypted and built into SABER. SABER can be paired with its very own smartphone app that will allow its users to read a detailed analysis of collected data, possible next steps, and easily get in contact with mental health counselors and/or physicians.

Introduction

High schoolers, new parents, teachers, CEOs all have a similar problem. All of these groups are challenged by immense workloads and societal expectations leading to increased levels of stress and anxiety. Although stress and anxiety are common and in small amounts can be healthy, people still lack the ability and the necessary resources to properly manage it. The Stress Anxiety Band for Emotional Relief (SABER) offers people who are struggling with stress and anxiety with the tools to reduce and manage their stress levels. SABER provides services such as distressing and anxiety relief exercises and monitors appetite, heart rate, stress and anxiety levels to provide detailed reports and assessments on the user’s mental health.

SABER attempts to relieve stress and anxiety by not only offering personal help but also having a network of participating mental health institutions available for immediate emergency help or professional consultation which can be accessed through the SABER band or the app.

A Big Problem with a Simple Solution

Many scientists studying mental health believe that there is a biochemical relationship between long term stress and anxiety and depression. In fact, in many recent studies, long term stress has been shown to restructure the brain, changing areas that regulate emotions and memories (MQ Mental Health). Mental health issues are often interconnected and cannot be resolved through self-remedies because they require professional help. Although the United States is now more receptive to addressing mental health issues there are many older people and new immigrants who come from a background where mental health is not addressed properly. In many Asian (i,e regions such as East, South, and Southeast Asia)  countries showing signs of mental illness or publicly stating it results in ostracization, and discrimination. South Asian people for example often lose marriage proposals and social standing when they are open with their mental health issues . People from these and similar backgrounds along with students, new parents and many others feel stressed from their workloads, financial responsibilities, and managing personal relationships. According to MQ Mental Health among adults in the U.S, 66% say that work related stress is their main source of stress followed by 28% saying that the main cause of stress comes from personal relationships (Fig 1). This is significant because it indicates that the main sources of stress are things that can be managed easily by an individual with the proper resources.

Chart describing the sources of stress in America

Fig 1: Main Sources of Stress for American Adults (from MQ Mental Health)

The problem here is abundantly clear. People face stigma and discrimination from society for mental health issues that can be linked to long exposure to stress. They do not have enough accessibility to resources that would help them manage their stress that also saves them money in the long term. Common methods to destress and relieve anxiety often involve shoddy alternative therapy, expensive yoga lessons, and therapy. Of course although there are other inexpensive methods they can be time consuming and hard to allocate time for in a society that values efficiency and is as hectic as ours. SABER offers quick and easy access and works as a preventative measure to ensure stress does not build up and there is a dedicated place where people can look too for help before encountering a situation where they have a mental break down (Photos 1 & 2).

Our Mission

SABER’s primary purpose is to help people who are dealing with anxiety and stress. By setting up daily reminders and suggesting physical and mental exercises, SABER is trying to provide users with the necessary tools to deal with their emotional condition. Every component and feature will be designed to help users have a pleasant and effective experience.

Descriptions of Major Components

Image 1 : SABER Side View ( Source: Author)

SABER will come with a bendable display screen which provides easier readings and allows users to personalize their SABER. Since the screen is ⅓ of the wristband length, users will be able to modify the color that appears on it. Something quite similar to image 1 & 2. Also, depending on the user’s heart rate SABER will display warning and cautionary colors under emergency circumstances. This will also trigger a series of follow up notifications, reminders, and mental exercises that will help the user deal with whatever situation is occurring.

Image 2: Sensor (Source : Author)

All this is possible thanks to a ceramic covered sensor located on the backside of the wristband. The ceramic cover boots the capability for better readings of bodily signals, such as heartbeat, and increases the accuracy of it by 40% in comparison to other similar products (Image 2). SABER is able to detect the heartbeat to start up system operations.

Image 3: Microphone & Speaker (Source : Author)

Aside from the screen and sensor features, SABER will also come with a mini-microphone and speaker, see image 4. These two components serve as additional tools that will help users during moments of need. As soon as the sensor detects an anomaly, a stressful moment occurring, or if the user activates the SABER, a calm voice of the user’s choosing will take them through a series of steps that will help them calm down.

Phone Application

There will  also be a compatible phone app for SABER, which will allow users to fully analyze their data and review their progress. This app will also serve as a platform for other important features such as; an in-depth description of mental and physical exercises, graphs on the user’s data and progress, recommendation to improve and other features.

Why will it work?

This new technology will offer a personal one to one interaction between users and machine. SABER’s algorithm was designed to adapt and learn from the user’s emotional experiences. As soon as the initial survey is complete, SABER will start monitoring the user’s bodily signals and occasionally suggest different mental exercises with the purpose of improving the user’s emotional state. These seemly random notifications will be subjected to the user’s condition. However, if the user wants, they can enable any of them at any time. They will also be able to restrict the number of times per day these notifications will appear. Making it less tedious and stress relieving for those users that want to personalize their own treatment even more. This system aims to empower users to take care of themselves while at the same time having SABER as a supplementary tool to improve their emotional state. In comparison to other similar products, SABER will have the edge on versatility and customization, as well as a system entirely devoted to the improvement of the users emotional state.

SABER: A Necessity in the Modern Age

Our current world is filled with new technologies which had helped us grow as an species. But at the same time these new technologies have made it more difficult to us to open up about topics such as stress and anxiety. Also, our society works in such a way that it portraits demonstrations of emotions as a sign of weakness. This shared belief dictates that we must never show our emotions nor attend to take care of ourselves emotionally in public spaces. It has become so common in fact, that some people seem it as a normal thing at this point. They blame themselves for not being strong enough to deal with their lives, and instead of seeking out for help ther isolate themselves. One of the causes might be the alarming rate at which human interaction dependency on technology has increased. We are constantly checking on what is happening online that we barely have time to stop and think about our emotional state and how we can take care of ourselves. As a combination of existing technologies and therapeutic treatments, SABER will try to improve the overall well being of people who have a hard time opening up to others. Our mission is to change the way people see technology in relation to their emotions. To turn existing technologies into tools we can use to better ourselves mentally.

What is Our Plan?

We plan on having the first SABER bands to roll out in Spring 2021.  We will officially announce the product in a press conference in Fall of 2020.  The bands will be manufactured at a factory in upstate New York and will be ready to ship to retailers hopefully by April 2021.  The retail price of a SABER will be $360.00 with the plan to cut the price by about $50.00 three to five years after launching the product.  The cost to manufacture each band will be about $255.00 so we will turn out about $105.00 profit per band. The plan is for SABER to be a successful technology that consumers will immediately resonate with.  We believe we can sell about 10-15 million units per year which is around the same amount of sales of the Apple Watch per year. SABER will create a completely new market in wearable technology and our main focus is treating stress and anxiety, not making money.  We will donate 20 percent of profits to Anxiety and Depression of America, or ADAA, which is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention, treatment, & cure of anxiety, depression and co-occurring disorders.

Material Sourcing and Pricing

Each SABER band will be fully equipped with the latest screen, AI, and   The screen on the band is going to be a SAMSUNG Infinity Flex Display which is a display capable of bending.  The screen will be able to bend and be as flexible as the entire band itself. A sensor will be placed on the opposite side of the display.  The part of the band that contains the display and sensor will be encased in a flexible soft plastic material known as thermoformed plastic. This material is formed past its elastic limit into plastic deformation.  It is cheap to manufacture and very sturdy. The speakers, microphone and internal hardware and software will also be encased in this part of each SABER. The band part of each SABER will be made of a woven nylon material and will latch together on each end using magnets. The SABER will be a very durable product made of materials that are cost-effective to produce, but of great quality.

To ensure SABER is affordable while using the best technology available we have looked into various materials and products that we can derive Similar technologies used in products such as the Apple watch and Royole bendable screen phone, the FlexPai, are crucial to determine SABER’s manufacturing cost. According to the article, No, the Apple Watch Does *Not* Cost $84 to Make, the approximate manufacturing cost of the Apple Watch goes around “$225 for the 42mm Sport, in the first few months. Perhaps $185 later, after build-to-order and component quality issues are resolved.” Considering that this is an accurate estimation, we can deduce that the cost of the sensors might round to $75 or less per unit.

On the other hand, Royole has a much higher price for its first flexible phone. At a alarming cost of $1,869 it is rather difficult to get our hands on one of those. However, SABER will not have such a ridiculous price, instead, we will use a much cheaper but sufficient bendable screen that can be purchased in websites such as Alibaba.com. According to the website Alibaba.com, the cost of the Flexible OLED display 6 inches 18:9 2160×1080 with HDMI controller board for flexible OLED display goes for around $200 to $500. SABER screen dimensions is smaller than that of a regular phone. Based on this information, we estimate that SABER’s screen cost per unit will be around $100 per unit. As for the rest of the hardware, software, and it maintenance, it is probably be $80 to $100 or even higher. But this number will change once the software is created. Other accessories and parts are estimated to cost $15 to $25.

Components   Cost
Screen$100.00
Sensor$75.00
Internal Hardware & Software $80.00
Total Manufacturing cost$255.00
Retail$360.00
Profit$105.00

Note: All prices are estimates per SABER unit and are subject to change depending on vendors

Conclusion

SABER bands are going to be revolutionary.  They will completely change wearable technology and offer a completely new and fresh way to treat anxiety.  Most people don’t know how to deal with their anxiety and can often let it get the best of them. With SABER, this doesn’t have to be the norm anymore.  Users of SABER will basically have a personal life coach at the palm of their hands that can help them get through even the most difficult situations life has to offer.  Mental health is our main concern at SABER Technologies and we believe reducing anxiety will greatly help to improve mental health. A mentally healthy person is a happy person.  Owning a SABER will be a great option to find happiness for people who are often anxious on a day to day basis. SABER bands are going to change the way we as a society look at and treat anxiety forever and will be the next and hopefully final step to treating anxiety and stress.

Self-Assessment

This was assignment was undoubtedly the most revealing assignments of all for the reason that we had to share leadership among each other. Up to this point, we were all in charge of our own individual projects, completely entitled of creative liberty to write our assignments. However, the proposal and presentation were highly dependent on teamwork and the successful exchange of ideas in order to come up with a competent structure. Personally, I like to think that I am a team player, but I have never worked with people who disagree with me so drastically. I am not implying that this was a bad thing, not at all, but it was rather interesting to discuss with my team-mates and realized that my ideas were not always the best. It helped me realized that group projects in college are not as bad if paired with responsible and dedicated people.

For the structure of the proposal, we discussed among us, suggested different approaches, consulted the course book, only examples, and proposals made by other students from previous semesters. As for the content of the proposal, we all did some research separately and then came back to a group discussion to decide which idea was going to be used. In the end, we all agreed on one and from there started adding more features to our product and discarding others. Resulting in what I think was a successful display of teamwork.

In conclusion, the presentation was carried in a way I did not expect, nevertheless, it worked flawlessly and my teammates and I could not be more satisfied with the results. Everyone worked in their respective sections, but we also looked at each other’s work to provide assistance. This part of the group project allowed me to learn so much from both of my teammates about structure and composition, as well as creativity. For these reasons and more I think this assignment was the most revealing and productive of all.

Note: Initially, we made a outline for this project, laying down all the possible product and features of our project. However, it was lost when we started writing it on top of the outline. As for the first draft, we did not create a separate document. We simply did some editing after the peer review.

Introductory Letter

My name is Diego Rodriguez and I am an intended computer science major student, currently in my second year of college, and a member of the Robotics club at the City College of New York. In high school I was part of multiple clubs, including; soccer team, wilderness club, science club, English literature and grammar club, and bike club. Due to my extracurricular activity’s participation, I earned awards in leadership, and a speaker’s achievement award, for which I am incredibly grateful. My activities in high school motivated me to do the same in college and become a leader that elevates others and help them achieve their goals, even though the number of clubs I am part of has reduced. Now being a member of the Robotics club, I would like to apply what I have learned about teamwork and leadership, but also, I want to learn how the shift in social norms changes in a more professional and mature setting.

Computer science is my intended major; however, I am also in the pursuit of a minor in philosophy. Ever since I started college, I have developed an increasing passion for philosophy, specifically in ethics. I believe that if students were to be taught ethics at an early age, my generation would be in better shape ethically speaking. Ethics has taught me the importance of cultivating my virtues as well as helping others cultivate their own. I would like to one day be content with whom I will become, and there is no better guide to accomplish this than to study ethics.

The reason why I am applying to The S Jay Levy fellowship is that I believe it is essential for any student pursuing a major in science and minor in philosophy, to experience how professionals navigate their fields and interact with each other. I believe that what makes the team successful are its members and their professional relationships with each other. I want to learn what are the technical and social skills required to be an efficient member that can contribute to a team’s goal. I would also like to learn how the dynamics of a group influence the outcome of their performance as a unit and the relationships between colleagues at work.

As a current member of the robotics club, I have learned how important each member of a team is. Now, I would like to experience how these skills are applied in the professional world. And I know that The S Jay Levy Fellowship Program will help me to accomplish these goals.

Lab Report Assignment

GAINING RUNNING SPEED & ENDURANCE.

The Applications Of a One Mile Daily Run Workout

Diego Rodriguez

The City  college of New York

Abstract

If an average person runs one mile every day, for five days, would their endurance and speed increase? Would they stay the same? What would happen? The answers are yes, if an average person decides to start running daily suddenly, their stamina and speed will increase due to the nature of our bodies biology. Which their first reaction to strong muscular stimuli is to improve its conditions by focusing more energy on healing damaged muscular tissue resulting from whichever physical activity is perform. Our muscles can adapt and become fitter for future instances where the same, or more muscular strength might be needed. This lab report demonstrated that an average person speed and endurance could increase within the first five days of starting running one mile per day.

Introduction

The incrementation of speed and stamina are essential skills most athletes try to maintain for as long as they can while competing. In sports where speed and endurance are crucial, athletes spend countless hours perfecting their technique and incrementing their speed and stamina. Through different methods specialized for whichever activity they need to perform for an extended period, as fast as possible, athletes can get the most out of their physical condition. However, methods can vary depending on which muscle groups are required to perform the task in question. Elite marathoners have to maintain a particular workout regiment, as well as the proper diet to either increase or maintain their physical condition, ready for the next marathon.

According to the article, Average Human Running Speed: Broken Down Age-Wise, the average running speed of a regular person is between 15 to 10 miles an hour. On the other hand, people who often run, have an average speed of 8.5 miles per hour, this is between the ages of 18 to 34. Then we have exceptional people like the elite marathoner Ryan Hall. Who according to the article, People Running Ryan Hall’s Marathon Pace on Treadmill, Hall ran the 2011 Boston marathon at an average speed of 12.6 MPH, or 4:46 minutes per mile, completing the marathon 02:04:58, demonstrating the considerable gap between ordinary people and elite marathoners. Nevertheless, average people can increase their speed and endurance by a significant amount by doing a medium difficulty training level workout. Since elite marathoners are already at their peak, an ordinary person who is just starting to train will obtain exponential results. If an average person runs one mile every day, for five days, then their endurance and speed will increase due to the constant exercise.

Methods & Materials

In the expand of 5 days, the subject ran one mile every day in an attend to record the time, distance, and speed at which one mile passes. The methods used to record the data consisted of an app called MayMapRun, which allows for accurate measurements of time, speed, and distance. For the most part, CCNY gym facilities were used to record the data. However, outside paths were also important for the experiment due to CCNY closing during weekends and other extreme weather conditions. Areas used include Washington Heights neighborhood and the surroundings of CCNY campus. The unchangeable variable was the distance, which was measured on miles; the other variables were the time, minutes from which average speed derived (mpm).

As for other materials used during this experiment:

  • Sport clothes
  • Plenty of water/Food
  • Journal to record the measurements

Results

Table 1: Data collected during the experiment, date, distance as the constant, time and average speed as variable being tested.

DateDistance (Mile)Time (Minutes)Average Speed (mph)
Sat, March 118:108
SUN, March 2110:3610.3
Mon, March 318:008
Tues, March 417:397.2
Wed, March 516:326.2

The data collected demonstrates a positive correlation between time and average rate. During the first day of receiving data, the subject performed a little bit over the standards of 10 to 15 mph with measurements of 8 mph or one mile every 8 minutes. See table 1. However, on the second day, the subject performed at 10.3 mph or one mile every 10:34 minutes. The last two days of collecting data showed an exponential increase in speed and time. With measurements of 7.2 and 6.2 mph, or one mile every 7:30 and 6:20 minutes.

Analysis

The results showed a positive correlation between time and speed, from which can be deduced that indeed, a regular person’s average rate and endurance can increased between the expand of 1 to 5 days of training. During the first day, the subject obtained results that exceeded expectations with 8.0 mph or 1 mile every 8 minutes. However, during the second day, the subject performed lower at 10.3 mph or 1 mile every 10:34 minutes, which was probably due to muscular soreness from the prior day. Nevertheless, the last two days showed a considerable increase in average speed from 7.2 and 6.2 mph, or one mile every 7:30 and 6:20 minutes, which demonstrated that indeed speed and endurance increased. See graph 1.

Graph 1: In this graph, the correlation between time and average speed showed a close relation, and despite what it might look like, there is a positive correlation between the two.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the results obtained from the experiment showed that a regular person who starts to train consistently will have an initial exponential increment on stamina and speed. This is something known by athletes as newbie gains. When we expose our muscles to an unusual level of training, our bodies compensates the demand of strength needed to perform the activity. By focusing lots of energy on healing the micro-cuts muscle fibers suffer from the training, provoking our muscular mass to increase, and depending on the type of work out, our stamina will increase, and the time we take to perform that activity will also decrease.

Further experiments could improve the accuracy and precision of these results by using more reliable tools to measure the of time, distance, and speed. Also, instead of five days, expanding the experiment for weeks or maybe months could produce better data. In addition, having multiple subjects participating on the experiment will provide more reliable data as well.

Self Assessment

There is a huge difference between writing a lab report using a thesis you developed yourself and writing one with the premise already given. For this assignment, the biggest challenge was to come up with a simple, but at the same time, serious thesis. I have worked on a few laboratory reports over the course of four years since I came to the US. However, they were not as difficult as this one. Because the experiment I decided to use to test my thesis was designed by myself, I became self-aware of how picky I had to be in order to obtain the most reliable results. Meaning, I had to be really careful when recording my results. In an instance, I had to repeat a session because the numbers I got did not match. Just as a reminder, my experiment consisted of running 1 mile every day as fast as I could, and that is not an easy task, so having to repeat that is not fun at all. But I wanted to get good results, so I had to do it again.

Other aspects in which I notice improvement was during the peer review. It is always useful to have a peer look over your work. It helped me with grammar and structure in general. As an immigrant whose first language is not English, this type of activities are always useful. As for other sources I used to improve my writing, Grammarly was indeed pretty useful as well.

Note: For this particular assignment I have a semi-first draft. However, instead of posting separately, I decided to post it at the end as a pdf file.

Technical Description

The Functionalities of a GoPro Session 4

What is a GoPro Session 4?

A GoPro Session 4 is the first cubic camera developed by GoPro that allows for fast and versatile recording. Arguably the smallest and lightest model launched by GoPro, this tiny camera was designed for versatility and commodity. The GoPro Session 4 comes with a variety of items that will help users during their adventures for a better and lighter experience.

As shown in figure 1, this is what comes in the box; a GoPro session 4 with integrated battery, a micro USB charging cable, a standard frame, a low profile frame, curved and flat base mounts, a locking plug, and three mounting buckles: mounting buckle, vertical mounting buckle, and a ball joint buckle.

Figure 1

Taken from GoPro original website.

According to GoPro’s original website, the Session 4 has only two buttons; one big button for recording locate on the top along with a small display screen, a wireless button that allows the user to navigate through the settings, and a side door where the memory card and USB port are located. The session 4 dimensions are 33 x 33 x 31.3 mm. Its cubic shape gives it the upper hand on previous models since the lens is right in the front of the camera. Allowing for better positioning of the camera in case the user wants to rotate the angel; they can take the camera out of the frame case and turn it to the desired angle. The GoPro session 4 is also waterproof up to 10 meters underwater; this makes it perfect for water-related activities like surfing and diving. Just make sure that the side door it’s closed.

How does a GoPro session 4 works?

Previous cameras launched by GoPro possess a standard set of components which makes them perform their function at their best. However, the GoPro session 4 was designed to fulfill specific tasks and situations, which sets it apart from any other previous model. Its small size, low profile design, and water resistance make it perfect for water-related and high paced sports/activities. (See figure 2)

The Len

Undoubtedly the most critical part of any camera, session 4 lens covers about 99 percent of the front of the camera. With a capacity of recording at 60 frames per second and a resolution of 1440, session 4 allows users to record fast-paced action in the go.

Camera Status Screen

On the top side of the camera, there is a small screen that allows users to see the camera status as well as doing some minor changes in settings without having to look at the phone app. However, for better control over configurations, it is always recommended to use the GoPro app.

Shutter/Select Button

One of the only two buttons this camera possesses is the shutter or select button located on top of the camera, besides the status screen. This button functions as a way to start recording by just pressing it once. Also, this button allows the user to switch and select different settings.

Microphone

With two powerful microphones, one in the front and the back of the camera, the session 4 will record high-quality audio with perfect audio-footage synchronization. The receivers are located in the front and the end of the camera, providing a 180-degree angle audio recording coverage.

Camera status lights

Immediately after pressing the shutter button, a red light with appearing in the front and the back of the camera. Rapidly blinking, this red light signals that the camera has started recording. On the other hand, when pairing the phone app and the session 4, this one will display a blue light to indicates the status of the connection. Since there is not much hand to hand interaction between the camera and the user, this system of lights makes it more intuitive to the user and overall improves the experience of using a session 4.

Micro-USB Port & Micro-SD Card

These two components are located on the left side of the camera, locked away and protected from any dust or water from coming in. As their names indicate, the micro-USB port allows the user to charge, and directly connect to the session 4, if desired. On the other hand, the micro-SD card is the memory of the camera, and it is modifiable to whichever capacity the user wants.

The Wireless Button

Located at the back of the session 4, this button function as a way of triggering the connection between the GoPro phone app, and the camera. Just press the button once, and wait for the blue lights to start blinking. Once these are flashing, proceed to connect your session 4 via wifi and Bluetooth. After this process is completed, the lights will stop blinking, and the user will be able to record from the phone and hands-free, while still being able to control advanced settings from the phone app.

In conclusion, for a lighter and versatile experience, the GoPro session 4 is the best choice for those who enjoy water-related sports and extreme activities. Equipped with the necessary features that will make the user’s adventures easier while at the same time recording high-quality footage, session 4 raises above its competitors — demonstrating that its size is nothing more than another feature that adds to its versatility.

Self-Assessment

For this assignment, the greatest obstacle was differentiating exposing from marketing a product. As much as I consulted the course book, Technical Communication 11th edition, I could not find the “clear” line that separates selling a product from explaining what it is and how it works. I had to ask my peers as well as professor Voisard for help, and even then I was not completely sure if my paper was being molded inside the boundaries of the assignment description. Nevertheless, I worked really hard to write it using the proper language tone as close to the assignment description as possible.

In conclusion, I realized that the wording of any type of professional document is the most important part, besides the content, in any written system of communication. Meaning that, if the correct dialect is not used, then whatever message is trying to be delivered will not be understood properly. That is why I spent quick a lot of time making sure that the tone of my paper was consistent throughout. But not only that, but I also had to deal with my bad habit of mixing dialects in English as well as in my native language, Spanish. To deal with these issues, I also searched online for helpful articles on the subject. Unfortunately, they were not as useful as I wished they were. Basically, those articles were repeating what the course book was already telling me. At that point, I decided to give it my best try. I am satisfied to my final draft but it was not easy at all.

Note: The first draft of this assignment was lost due to not creating a separate document, but instead, editing the first draft after the peer review and presenting it as a final. My apologies.

Memo Assignment

HOUSING COMPLEX, JARABACOA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.

Date: February 17, 2019

To: Manuel Alba, Architect Director

From: Diego Rodriguez, Project Director

Subject: Blue-prints, Planning and modifications

_____________________________________________________________________________

First, I would like to congratulate you on your presentation of the project, our client was very pleased with your plans and modification. Your proposal on adding a secondary set of solar panels was fantastic, especially because of the location you choose to place them which does not affect the overall aesthetic of the design. It also complements the hydroelectrical mechanism as well, which prevents total dependency on just one source of clean energy and goes well with the client’s wishes of a 100% environmentally friendly housing complex.

The client agreed to work with our initial proposal. However, there are some changes that need to be taken into consideration, changes regarding the location primarily. We are still going to build the housing complex in the Jarabacoa province; however, the client would like to move the location a few miles to the southwest. Apparently, they changed their mind about the complex being close to the main town. Instead, they would like to take advantage of the natural views, and the fact that the project will be build nearby El Pico Duarte. The new location will be around a place called Las Guazaras, a small town located 5 miles southwest of Jarabacoa’s main town. Population demographics still pretty much the same, middle class farmers for the most part. (Imager1)

New Location

Some members of my team already went to scout the area for promising sides. They came up with some interesting photos, would you mind looking at them? There is a folder attached to this memo, (image 2). The size of the some of the new real estate properties my team looked upon were similar the property the client was initially going to acquire. So, there should not be much of a difference in the distribution of space, buildings, and recreative areas. Overall, the soil consistency is still the same so your original blueprints will not be totally discarded. However, there are still some considerable changes to the structure of some of the recreative areas.

Additional Buildings

Also, the client wants to add a third building, besides the main building and the storage house nearby the pool. This third building is supposed to serve as playground area for the adults. It must be a two-floor building. In the first floor, the client would like to include a 4×10 feet pool table in the main room of the building, as well as a kitchen and a bathroom.

Nevertheless, this kitchen must be different in style from the kitchen at the main building. The client did not go into too much detail about how he/she wants the decoration to look like. Since the client liked your kitchen proposal design, would suggest sticking to a similar design to the one we use for the main kitchen; grey walls, light wood furniture. As for the arrangement of the furniture, freeze, microwave and everything else, it’s up to you to decide. But remember, stick to the original design of the main building’s kitchen.

On the second floor, the client wants to build two bedrooms in case multiple guests want to stay overnight. These bedrooms must be equipped with the necessary commodities, king size bed, 5×3 feet closet, side bed tables, and bathroom. As for the style of the bedrooms, grey walls, white ceiling and dark wood furniture. I will get in contact with the interior designer, Maria Guaba, to consult her on the matter. We can also set up a meeting to discuss possible ways to go about decorating these bedrooms.

Pool Modifications

Now, for the pool, the client would like to move it to the West side of the house complex. The client wants to take advantage of the mountains and the valley views as much as possible. Also, instead of a circular shaped pool, the client wants a rectangular shaped pool of about 6×14 meter and 8 feet deep. With medium size beach umbrellas of approximately 12 feet in diameter, 3 on the North and South side of the pool and 2 on the East side of the pool.

For the moment, these are the major changes requested by the client. Let’s first meet up and talk about the details and the acquisition of the new property.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Self Assessment

One of the big challenges of this assignment was understanding the difference between memos and other professional ways of communication. Such as the difference in format and style of memos in contrast with emails or letters. The first thing I noticed was that memos are basically chatting between work colleagues, where a certain margin of professionalism must be put in place. As well as understanding the differences between normal chatting and discussing ideas with your coworkers without being too friendly. This was my major revelation while working on this assignment. Other than that, everything else was relatively easy to follow.

As for some of the resources I used to work on this assignment, I consulted the course book, Technical Communication 11th edition, as well as some of the example given by professor Voisard. However, I must confess that I was not totally happy with my final draft. I looked at my peer’s memos during the peer review, as well as after the due date, and I could not stop thinking that mine was not there yet, it felt like it was missing something. Maybe the structure or the way I organized the images. But in my defense, professor Voisard told us to use Microsoft Word instead of Google docs, and I am not particularly good at dealing with Microsoft word. I tried my best to adjust by watching tutorials on how to navigate Microsoft Word, how to use the tool-bar as well as how to control the other elements such as images and graphs. For future reference, I will focus on understanding the software I will be working with before digging into the writing part of future assignments.

Note: I did not save a first draft for this assignment, but instead, wrote on top of the first assignment after the peer review. My apologies.
